Former CEO of Nintendo of EuropeYesterday in an interview, David Gosen, former CEO of Nintendo of Europe called Wii Fit a digital bathroom scale. According to Gosen, 60 percent of all consumers who purchased a Wii Fit, played it once and didn’t play it again.

It’s interesting to see the former Nintendo executive who use to frequently say “This year is a good year to buy a [insert Nintendo product]” turn a complete 360. Gosen is now VP for Microsoft’s Xbox and claims that Wii Fit is too “gimmicky” - meaning consumers will get bored with it very quickly. Read more

Wii Fit Family Challenge

I discovered this week that Nickelodeon and Nintendo are sponsoring a contest for families with the most Wii Fit spirit to compete for the title of “Wii Fit Fittest Family.”  Sounds interesting doesn’t it? In order to become one of the 3 semi-finalists all contestants must submit a 2 minute video that describes why your family should be selected to compete in the Wii Fit Family Challenge. Judges will weigh all entries based on the following:

  • Was the video on yopic (30%)
  • Creativity (20%)
  • Degree to which the candidate embraces the spirit of the Nickelodeon Brand (20%)
  • Degree to which the candidate embraces the spirit of the Wii Fit Brand (30%)

If you are chosen as semi-finalist your family will receive:

  • A Wii console (Approximate Retail Value (“ARV”): $249.99)
  • A copy of Wii Fit for the Wii console (ARV: $89.99)
  • Round-trip coach airfare for Semi-Finalist family (a maximum of five family members) to Orlando, Florida (ARV: $1,500.00)
  • Four (4) nights/five (5) days stay at Nickelodeon Family Suites by Holiday Inn in Orlando, Florida (ARV: $1,200.00) and
  • $1,000.00 in spending money for each semi-finalist family.

jOG: One Small Step for Man, One Giant Leap for Wii

July 24, 2008 by Jason · Leave a Comment

I came across a new controller for the Nintendo Wii today called the jOG. It’s being touted as motion sensor for game consoles that enables your character to move only when you do. It’s a really neat concept that perfectly compliments Nintendo’s gaming strategy for the Wii. Just imagine what playing the Wii Fit will be like using jOG. While jOG is available for Playstation, it will not be available for the Wii until this Christmas.

Keep an eye out for this nifty little device as I am sure it will really kick your aerobic workouts into over-drive. I am not sure what the jOG is expected to cost, but I will post more when I find out.

Looking For a Wii Fit? You’re Not the Only One

Wii FitIf you have been toying around with the idea of getting a Nintendo Wii Fit, then you might be in for a surprise. Nintendo has cooked up another best seller this year judging by the game’s hit reviews and sales. I thought finding a Nintendo Wii this past Christmas was hard, but getting your hands on a Wii Fit has proven to be even more challenging.

I have been watching the Video Game Best Sellers list at Amazon for the past several days and the Wii Fit has consistently been in the top 5. I also did some browsing at many of the major online retailers and the Wii Fit is back ordered on most sites. I also thought it would be interesting to see what Google Trends had to say about the Wii Fit. Somewhere between March and April search traffic for the Wii Fit started climbing and since its official release it has just spiked through the roof. What I found most interesting was that most of the traffic is coming from the UK.

Also causing Wii Fit to get more attention are some upcoming titles that will leverage the balance board. Some of these are Jillian Michaels Fitness Ultimatum 2009 and Spider Man: Web of Shadows. Personally I am excited to see more games like Wii Fit coming out that will engage players and get them active. America as become an obese society so it really is nice to see game manufacturers trying to step up and make a difference.

If you haven’t laid hands on a Wii Fit yet, it’s only going to get harder. I suggest you get off your couch and start nagging the sales clerks at Best Buy, Wal-mart, and Target until you get one. Or you could of course try to win one in the Wii Fit Challenge (registration ends on July 1st).

Wii Fit Challenge

June 23, 2008 by Jason · Leave a Comment

Wii-fitThis past Christmas my family purchased a Nintendo Wii as our “family gift” and we have really enjoyed it. A few months ago my wife told me about a new game that was coming out that would be fitness oriented and help people get in shape while playing the Wii. I thought to my self “Sweet! but what’s the catch?” Turns out the Wii Fit is just as hard to find as the Nintendo Wii.
